A man was killed when a train hit him as he was rescuing a cow that got trapped between the railway track in Tirunelveli, police said.

The 26-year-old Thiraviam was taking his cattle for grazing when a cow's leg got trapped in the track on Tuesday.

Just as he managed to free the cow, the Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli passenger train hit him, injuring him seriously, railway protection force sources said.

He was rushed to the Tirunelveli Medical College hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
