Inspector Vinay Gawli of the Deonar police said that Subhash Surwade and his sister Asha (23) were arrested on Saturday after investigations revealed that they had coerced Sonali (20) to commit suicide.

Gawli said Sonali, who was employed with a private company, was married to Subhash for a year. It was an arranged marriage. Sonali lived with her husband and in-laws in Govandi.

At around 9.30 pm on Wednesday Sonali allegedly set herself on fire after pouring kerosene. She sustained 90 per cent burns.

The family members rushed her to Rajawadi hospital. However, she succumbed to severe burns at around 12.05 am on Thursday, said Gawli.

Sonali’s parents later told the police that Subhash and and Asha used to harass her mentally and physically for dowry and the harassment started soon after marriage.

Following the suicide, Sonali’s mother, who works as a vegetable vendor, lodged a complaint with the Deonar police.

“Based on the complaint, we registered cases against the two and subsequently arrested them. It has now transpired that Subhash and Asha (who is unmarried) used to torture the deceased,” Gawli said.
