Three days after Mangol Puri police arrested a 22-year-old man for having allegedly knifed his woman friend to death, Kapil Sharma committed suicide by hanging himself early on Sunday in Tihar jail.
Jail guards had begun a search for Sharma at 5.30 am, the time when the first count of the inmates occurs on a day, after he was found “missing”, said Sunil Gupta, Tihar jail’s public relations officer.
“For hanging himself, Sharma used the cloth bandages that were wrapped across his stomach, abdomen, neck and wrist when he had arrived at the jail on Saturday night around 8 pm,” according to Gupta.
The deceased left no suicide note and he had been observed behaving normally since arriving in the jail, said Gupta.
Sharma had sustained multiple injuries on his body on Thursday night itself when, apparently suffering guilt pangs, he allegedly tried to stab himself to death.
This was hours after he had stabbed his alleged girlfriend Kavita Chauhan (22), a final-year student of a company secretaryship course, eight times at an east Patel Nagar Girl’s hostel where she was staying since early this year.
Sharma suspected that the girl was seeing another man, according to the police. Chauhan had died at the spot while the police nabbed Sharma, having procured the information on his whereabouts from his elder brother who stays in Mangolpuri, at the Patel Nagar metro station.
On Saturday, according to Gupta, Sharma was to be lodged in jail number three meant for the first time offenders —called Mulahija ward — but had to be instead taken directly to the jail’s main hospital.
“He had attempted to commit suicide and the police had taken him to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where he was treated and the injuries were bandaged,” he said.
“Considering his state, we sent him to the hospital where the doctor checked him and gave symptomatic treatment,” he added.
Sharma was checked twice more on Saturday night, at 9.40 pm and 10 pm. When asked, Gupta said the jail hospital is maximum-security venue though the armed guards stay outside the hospital to keep vigil.
Sharma’s body is lying at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where it will undergo an autopsy.
