WITH BJP national president Rajnath Singh playing truant, the Guru Gobind Singh (Manikbag) overbridge inauguration has turned full circle, coming to rest once again at Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Invitations issued by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) announced that Singh would dedicate the Rs 11-crore facility to the public at 5 pm tomorrow. However, with less than 24 hours to go for the ceremony and no sign of the BJP national president, it is almost certain that Chouhan, listed as chief guest on the IMC invite, will do the honours, come Tuesday.
Singh’s non-arrival may be a setback to Mayor Dr Uma Shashi Sharma, but is poetic justice for the hundreds of motorists who were denied access to the overbridge for over two months. All because the Mayor wanted the overbridge to be kickstarted by a national leader.
The lady made inauguration overtures to a host of top names including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and President A P J Abdul Kalam before being forced to settle for Chouhan by Rajnath Singh’s absence.
At the time of going to press the district administration had received no news of Singh’s arrival. ‘‘We were informed that the Chief Minister will reach Indore tomorrow. But we have no information about the BJP president’s visit,” informed Collector Vivek Aggarwal.
The local BJP leadership, too, declared that Singh’s visit was as good as cancelled. “No official information has reached us from party headquarters which means that he isn’t coming,” said City BJP chief Ramesh Mendola.
As per the IMC invite, Mayor Dr Sharma would preside over the Guru Gobind Singh overbridge inauguration.
The programme is slated to witness attendance by Urban Administration Development Minister Jayant Mallaiya, PWD Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Forest and district in-charge Minister Himmat Kothari, Minister of State for Forests Prakash Sonkar, Indore MP and BJP national vice-president Sumitra Mahajan, MP Krishnamurari Moghe and Pancha-ja Chairman Laxman Singh Gaud.
MLAs Mahendra Hardia and Usha Thakur, City BJP chief Ramesh Mendola and IDA Chairman Madhu Verma would be the special invitees on the occasion.
