Congress president Sonia Gandhi disclosed on Wednesday night that Manmohan Singh was her prime ministerial choice even in 1999 when she had staked claim to form the new government after the fall of Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led coalition.

"I think so," she told a TV channel in an interview when asked whether Singh would have been the prime minister if her attempt to form a government had succeeded in 1999.

Gandhi said, "Yes, in fact I went first by myself and second time with Dr Singh. Yes, that is true."

Gandhi also said that she had spoken to Manmohan about his becoming the prime minister when the 2004 election results were coming out.

"Yes, I did. I did speak to him," she said.

After 2004 election results were out, Congress Parliamentary Party met and elected her as the prime ministerial candidate, which she turned down and instead nominated Singh.
