As the police failed to arrest the killers or the brain behind the murder, the legal fraternity, traders and the Bharatiya Janata Party decided to observe bandh on Saturday. In response to the call, the city observed a complete bandh and all business establishments remained closed.

Town observes complete bandh

THE COMMUNALLY sensitive Mau township is on the boil once again three days after the murder of a BJP leader’s teenager son.

As the police failed to arrest the killers or the brain behind the murder, the legal fraternity, traders and the Bharatiya Janata Party decided to observe bandh on Saturday. In response to the call, the city observed a complete bandh and all business establishments remained closed.

The educational institutions were also closed as the administration, which had already announced closure of schools and colleges for two days extended it by one day in view of BJP’s programme and the bandh.


Sources said lawyers and BJP activists blocked traffic for hours together in protest against the killing and police failure to nab the accused besides police lathicharge against the agitators, who protested on August 2 when the murder took place.

Senior BJP leader and MP Kalraj Mishra also reached the township on Saturday who also joined the dharna staged by BJP activists. Mishra also visited the house of Triveni Prasad, the BJP leader whose son Ankit Kumar Soni was murdered on August 2.

Mishra lashed out at the Mulayam Singh government for deterioration in the law and order scenario in the State, holding it’s pro-mafia stance responsible for rise in crime scenario.

Source said windowpanes of some vehicles were smashed by the irate mob while staging a demonstration against the killing. There was however, no report of any major untoward incident from any part of the district on the eve of bandh.

According to Mau district magistrate P Guruprasad, the situation in the town is normal with shops closed in some areas. He said 3 PAC companies and 2 RAF companies besides local police have been deployed in strength in the town.

Adding, he said one more company of RAF is arriving in the township.

It may be mentioned that violence broke out in the town on August 2 following the killing of the student due to which over two-dozen people, mostly students, were injured in the police lathicharge. Some police vehicles and shops were also set on fire.

Inspector General of Police (Varanasi zone) AC Sharma, Divisional Commissioner and DIG of Azamgarh range are camping in the town since then as Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is scheduled to arrive in the town in connection with the disbursement of unemployment allowance on August 8.
