MCD continues bulldozing Delhi's fashion hub

The fashion fraternity in the capital was left shaken as MCD bulldozers continued to pull down the outlets of some of the best known designers on Thursday as part of its demolition drive against illegal constructions.
The MCD tore through the 1, MG shopping mall in the fashion hub in Lal Dora area for the second day running amidst a yagna by shopowners and employees as the Delhi High Court refused to entertain their plea to stay the demolition drive.
The affected property owners on MG Road also held a candle light vigil against the MCD action.
MCD bulldozers pulled down shops in the mall area amid tight security even as scores of showroom owners and employees protested against the action, claiming that the buildings were constructed before December 31, 2000, the court's cut-off period for demolition.
The area houses several outlets of some of the big names in the Indian fashion industry such as Suneet Verma, Ranna Gill, Rohit Gandhi, Rohit Bal, Leena Singh and Mandira Virk.
All malls and shopping complexes on MG Road are set to be targeted as part of the drive, a senior MCD official said.
The civic body had on Wednesday begun its drive in the area after the Delhi High Court asked it to demolish illegal structures including in 'Lal Dora', which were considered to be out of the purview of building bye-laws.
