Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang
Known for his stoicism and determination for peace, the teacher-turned-Chief Minister D Dethwelson Lapang is one of the tallest leaders cutting across the party lines in Meghalaya today.
A leader of Congress party, Lapang leads the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance coalition Govt that came to power in the state in early March in 2003. Soon after taking over the reigns of the state, he renewed efforts to negotiate with militants and also met Advani on July 11, 2003 in this regard. He has also offered peace talks to militants. He is also known to be a religious man.

Born on 10th April, 1934, Lapang had primary education in his home village Nongjri of Ri Bhoi District in the state and Graduated (B.A) through an evening section from St. Anthony’s College, Shillong.
Having started his career as a road labourer, Lapang served as a school teacher for five years and then as a Typist in Assam Civil Secretariat. Later he was promoted to Lower Division Assistant and served for 13 years in that capacity. He has also served as a Sub-Inspector of schools for 10 years.
