From running a tiny manufacturing unit in Tughlakabad to designing Bill Clinton’s black shervani and white churidar, menswear designer Renu Nigam has come a long way. She attributes it all to her passion for designing that got her to finally launch her swanky showroom called Wedding Weaves in South Ex, after 24 years of experience, on Friday.

“I have no formal training in designing. It’s something that grew out of passion and it got me to where I am today,” she candidly admits.

So what’s it about Nigam that has got people talking about her and her creations? Her creations for the former US President, for one. “We also designed a faun coloured shervani for Clinton. Getting a chance to dress someone like him is a big honour,” said Nigam, who displayed over 300 shervanis at her new store where model-actor Jas Arora was the only known face to walk the ramp.

Why did she choose menswear? “Why not?” she quips. “It’s about time that men too have a variety to choose from for their big day.” That explains why she has designs for every occasion, for every member of the family.

Nigam has concentrated on brighter hues like deep reds and blues rather than the usual beige and blacks. Her creations have everything from intricate antique to pitta dakka work, embellished with crystals and stones. Her fabrics include light Italian georgette, jamevar, heavy silks, jacquards. They are priced between Rs 10,000-Rs 2 lakh.

She is happy with her huge store and says it’s too early to talk about expansion. “For now I’ve got a platform to showcase and hopefully make a difference in the world of men’s wedding ensemble,” she says.
