A Dalit woman was applying ice on the forehead of her child who was running high temperature. For the want of medical help, she has to do with makeshift arrangement.
Such is the plight of Mirchpur Dalits, who have been putting up at Tanwar farmhouse since April 25, 2010. They left their homes after caste tension erupted in the village, around 60 km from here, following a clash between the Jat community and Dalits. Jats had torched the houses of Dalits, resulting in the death of Tara Chand, 70, and his disabled daughter.
More than three years since the incident and "countless unfulfilled promises" of the administration, there seems to be no end to their woes. "Our children are growing weaker by the day and some of them are sick. Though the administration announced medical help for us but nothing was done," Sube Singh, 75, said. "We are living in filthy and unsafe conditions."
Dalits said their only hope of living a life of dignity was to get rehabilitated at a place other than Mirchpur. "We have learnt that a two-member committee appointed by the Supreme Court to assess our condition has recommended to the apex court to rehabilitate us at a place other than Mirchpur. This is the only solution to our problems," Singh said.
It is said that the committee, in its report, blamed the Haryana government for the plight of the Dalits, and recommended it to provide them with houses in a secure environment, education, health and employment.
The team recommended the government to appoint a psychology expert for the counselling of children and women to erase social trauma from their minds.
Singh and Ved Pal Tanwar, who has provided Dalits with shelter here) on Wednesday left for Delhi as the apex court is likely to pronounce the verdict in their case on September 27.
