Playing with China's Jie Zheng, the fifth seeds were beaten 6-4, 3-6, 7-10 by Rennae Stubbs and Marcelo Melo. The unseeded Australian-Brazilian duo took 81 minutes to see off the Indo-Chinese pair.

However, there was some good news for the Indian fans. Sania Mirza, after having lost out of both the singles and mixed doubles, marched onto the women's doubles quarters with Elena Vesnina.

The Indo-Russian pair needed 86 minutes to demolish the challenge of Spaniards Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and A Medina Garriques. The seventh seeds overpowered their opponents winning 72 points as compared to only 56 by their opponents.

Sania and Elena will next play the top seeds, Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta.
