AFTER A month-long exercise and wanderings through the maze of counselling for admission in one of the prestigious NITs of the country, the newly inducted batch of first year engineering students of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) will chill out at the fresher function— Swagat-2k6--at the sprawling MP Hall complex on Saturday.

The preparations for the fresher function are almost complete with the organising team getting down to making it a success since July 25 itself.

"It is an event which acts as a platform for the newly inducted students to exhibit their extra-curricular talents. Besides it also facilitates better co-ordination and communication between the freshers and the senior students," said president of MNNIT Student Activity Centre, Prof Rakesh Narain.

He said that a committee of senior faculty members including Prof PK Mishra, Mukul Shukla, Mayank Pandey and others have been formed to monitor the preparations.

The preparations for Swagat-2k6 are continuing along with a series of elimination rounds which include two rounds of written and opinion test for the selection of Mr Fresher and Ms Fresher.

Apart from this, entries for various events are also being short-listed by the students themselves.

"It is purely an event dedicated to students, hence right from the selection of the events to the management of the function, the responsibility is being borne by second year students in the form of a committee of student co-ordinators," informed one of the student co-ordinators Anshul Agarwal.

He said that the committee of student co-ordinators includes Sonu Choraria, Arihant Jain, Sabyasachi Panda, Shivendra Pratap Singh, Yogesh Mishra, Kavita Aditi Mehrotra, Yash Biyani and Shayari Bhattacharya.

Anshul Agarwal also informed that the committee of senior students visited freshers' hostels and selected students for the final round of students who will showcase their esoteric curricular faculty on the D-day.

The rehearsal for the events were also held at the MP Hall complex under the supervision of senior students.

The events selected for the freshers day function include Soft Song, English Song, Fast Track, Duet Song, Dramatics-spoof and skits, Western Dance, Bhangra and Rajasthani Dance.

Rehearsal of every event is being monitored by a committee of senior students who are leaving no stone unturned to make the function a life time experience for all.

"The rehearsal begins at 6.30 pm and continues till 8.30 pm which facilitates students to practice for the event without losing their important classes," informed Prof Rakesh Narain.

As per the tentative programme schedule, the function will begin with welcome speech, followed by inauguration ceremony. Director of MNNIT Prof Arun Baran Samaddar will address the newly inducted students.

Chief Warden Prof PK Mishra is scheduled to deliver traditional Warden speech on the occasion.

The highlight of the fresher party nevertheless will be the title of Mr Fresher and Ms Fresher. The function will culminate with formal address by president of SAC Prof Rakesh Narain.
