Pakistan's dismal performance in the 2003 World Cup called for desperate measures. Opportunity presented itself in the form of Mohammad Hafeez, an opening batsman and a useful offspinner.

His selection was based on his performance in Sharjah and NatWest Challenge in England. Working in his favour is his good technique and temperament.

His organised approach towards batting ensured that he got an opportunity in the Test team in the three-Test series against Bangladesh.

He quite justified his selection by scoring a half century in the first Test and going on to make his first hundred in his second Test. However, his form then dipped alarmingly in the ODIs against South Africa, leading to his exclusion from the Test squad.
