CITY KEEPING its fingers crossed for well-being of 860 pilgrims to Mecca after tragic news of more deaths.

Among the dead reported on Saturday is Principal of the Halim Muslim English School Najma Waheed, while Ikramul Haq of Peshkar Road lost his nephew, his wife and niece in the stampede during the stoning ritual at Mina. Although, all of them were settled at Lucknow, but they had gone on the pilgrimage from their native city Kanpur. The death toll from Kanpur went to five, as a leather industrialist Haji Iqbal died of cardiac arrest minutes after stampede on Thursday.

Najma Waheed (55) had gone to pilgrimage for the first time and she was missing for the last two days. Her uncle Inamul Haq, accompanying her on the Haj, identified her body, lying in a refrigerated morgue in Mecca late Saturday noon. She is survived by a son and three daughters. Son Tariq Waheed and a daughter Sanobar are settled in United States.

However, two daughters — Huma and Sumbul— were staying with mother at t their Talaq Mahal residence. Najma Waheed was seen as a woman of progessive approach in the Muslim community.

A pall of gloom descended soon after the news of her death trickled in late Saturday noon. A large number of relatives gathered at her residences and tried to console her daughters. Several meetings were held to condole her death.

Same was scene was at Peshkar Road where Ikramul Rehman lost her niece Siratun Nisan, nephew Meraj Ashraf and his wife Fauzia Ashraf in the stampede.
