The Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR) Media Fellowship programme concluded on Wednesday with the distribution of certificates to the participants of the 17-day programmes by the Chief Engineer, K.R. Subramanian.

The course, the first of its kind, was conducted in the scenic environs of the National Water Academy at Pune and saw a conglomeration of scribes and other media personnel from various parts of the country. The participants were drawn from the print and electronic media and also included filmmakers.
Designed to impart information about various aspects of water issues in the country, the course covered a wide range of issues - ranging from the introductory level to more detailed exploration in technical, social, economic, environmental, legal and other aspects of water issues.
"The course was designed to create a better understanding of water issues, on which often their is insufficient understanding or misreporting in the media," the course coordinator R.K. Suryawanshi elaborated.
The course involved both classroom study and field trips to a number of water sites like dams, hydroelectric plants - both functional and under construction.
"Visits to dams sites like Koyna and Tungabhadra were especially useful in understanding the way water is harnessed and used," said Amit Ukil, a reporter from The Telegraph, Purulia. Visits were also organised to dams in the vicinity of the NWA complex like Khadakvasla, Warasgaon and Panshet, which supply water to Pune and neighbouring areas.
A number of water specialists from various parts of the country spoke to the participants in interactive sessions over the two-odd weeks. The participants unanimously felt the workshop would enable them to understand and write on water resources in a more informed and balanced manner.
The NWA, established in 1988, is a training cum research centre where government water officials from across the country are trained in the development and management of water resources.
