Accusing erstwhile government of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed of hushing up the sex sandal in 2004, National Conference, the state's main opposition, on Sunday said there was a "deep-rooted conspiracy" behind it.

The coming to light of the sex scandal recently revolves around the deep-rooted conspiracy in the manner in which the scandal was hushed up by Mufti government in 2004," NC President Omar Abdullah said addressing a public meeting at Rumo in Pulwama district of South Kashmir on Sunday.

He referred to lists being circulated in the streets identifying persons allegedly involved in the scandal and said the way list of persons involved in the scandal was being circulated was part of the conspiracy.

The NC President said CBI, which has been entrusted the investigation into the case, should be given a fixed time so that the kingpin of the racket and others involved were identified.

The Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Abdul Rahim Rather alleged that the PDP-led government made a name in encouraging the menace of corruption and also maligned the honour of the people through sex scandal.

Referring to PDP's demand for exposure of politicians, security and police officers involved in the sex scandal, he said, "Why did they not reveal the names during their government in 2004 when the racket was exposed? They had hushed up the scandal then".
