Mulayam rejects RLD demand for harit pradesh

Rejecting his alliance partner Rashtriya Lok Dal's demand for a separate 'Harit Pradesh', Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday said he is not in favour of any more divisions of the state.

"We do not want division of the state. The results of divisions in the past have not been good. Smaller states are weak," he said at a function in Lucknow citing the example of rise in Naxalite violence in the newly-formed Chattisgarh.

Later, questioning the continuance of RLD in the ruling alliance in the state, SP general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh told reporters, "You should ask RLD chief Ajit Singh why his party is in ministry if he is opposed to us."

Ait Singh had recently accused the SP-led government of "all-round failure" and said the people of the state wanted to get rid of it.

"My party will deliberate and decide whether it wants to enter into a coalition with SP or not in the future', Singh has told reporters.

Singh had also said his party would soon launch an agitation on issues confronting the farmers and contest 220 seats in the forthcoming assembly elections in the state.
