ABHAY AWASTHI, State president of the newly formed Kisan evam Khet Mazdoor Congress Committee (KKMCC), a frontal organisation of the Congress party, has accused Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, of using the funds given by the Central government, in consolidating Samajwadi Party’s vote bank.

He said Yadav was ignoring farmers’ interests and handing over their most fertile and precious land to big industrialists at throw-away prices.

Talking to mediapersons here on Sunday, Awasthi, recognised as a prominent student leader in Allahabad, said the chief minister had miserably failed to convert Uttar Pradesh into ‘Uttam Pradesh’ but he had been propagating so and spending a huge amount of money on advertisements for the purpose.
He expressed concern that farmers were committing suicide as they were not in a position to repay their loans and money-lenders were exploiting them without any check.

He demanded enactment of legislation for an effective administrative check on the malpractice of the private money-lenders.

Awasthi said the Congress had resolved at its Hyderabad convention to focus on farmers and labourers and that was why it formed KKMCC headed by SS Surjewala at national level. Dr Bhola Pandey was appointed national convener of the organisation.

He said there were over 30 crore labourers in the country and 83 per cent of them were agricultural labourers.

“This is an unorganised sector and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh have decided to take measures for the uplift of this section of the society,” he added.

The Congress leader said that the new organisation would also have its units at district, tehsil and development block level and the size of these committees would be small.

He said the frontal organisation of the Congress party would also seek the help of voluntary organisations for development of farmers and farm labourers to eradicate poverty.

He said those student leaders, who were not able to contest polls in educational institutions after Lyngdoh Committee recommendations being accepted by the Supreme Court, should join his organisations and work for the development of rural areas.

He said the Congress was endeavouring to remove poverty and it had been accorded top priority by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government.
Awasthi said despite having little experience of rural life, he would leave no stone unturned to strengthen the Congress with the help of farmers and labourers.

He said the UPA government had launched many schemes for providing social security to common man in 2005 and most of these plans were aimed at helping the downtrodden class.

He said on October 11 he would go to Lucknow to take charge of his post at the office of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. The function will be held in the presence of UPCC chief Salman Khurshid and national convenor of KKMCC Dr Bhola Pandey.
