Mumbai film festival kicks off today

Film buffs will be treated to a week-long celebration of cinema, with the ninth MAMI film festival getting underway in Mumbai.

Film buffs here will be treated to a week-long celebration of cinema, with the ninth Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) film festival getting underway in the city on Thursday.

Organised by MAMI, the week-long festival will feature a tribute to film-maker HrishikeshMukherjee and will screen several of his landmark films including Golmaal, Anand and ChupkeChupke.Superstar AmitabhBachchan will be presented with the 'Special Award to salute Indian Cinema's Global Icon' while JavedAkhtar will be felicitated with the 'Lifetime Achievement' award for contribution to the industry at the opening ceremony, to be held on Thursday.Veteran music director Pyarelal will be honoured with the 'Outstanding Contribution to Indian film music award' while directors AparnaSen and GovindNihalani will also be awarded for their significant contribution.

Chinese film The Curse of the Golden Flower will be the opening film while Mira Nair's Namesake will be the closing film.

Hundred films from 32 countries will be screened at the event with Spanish films making an entry for the first time.

Indian films, Khosla Ka Ghosla in Hindi, Bayo in Marathi and Cyanide in Kannada will be screened alongside the critically acclaimed Spanish film Volver.
