Mumbai: June’s rainfall heaviest for month in 54 years
The city has witnessed the highest rainfall in June in the past 54 years.Updated: Jul 01, 2013 08:58 IST
By the end of the month on Sunday, Santacruz had recorded 1029.8mm of rainfall since June 1, while Colaba has received 954.7mm of rainfall in the same period.
The previous highest rainfall figures for June – 1,027.1 were recorded in 1971. The rainfall recorded at Santacruz is 96.3% surplus from the normal while rainfall recorded at Colaba is 72.42% more than normal.
The relentless downpour in the first fortnight of June, aided by the early onset of monsoon and consistent spells of rain in the latter half of the month has washed away all other records.
The city had received 604.6mm rainfall at Santacruz in the first half of June itself, while Colaba had received 540.9mm of rain in the same period.
According to the Met, unlike the previous two years, the early onset this year was what has contributed to the high numbers.
“The monsoon’s onset was early by two days this year and during the onset stage, the monsoon currents were very strong,” said VK Rajeev, director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), western region.
In the next few days, the city will receive normal showers and heavy spells can be expected after that, Met officials said.
