THE EVER smiling MLA, Haji Mushtaq Solanki, lost his week-long battle for survival at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi on Friday. He was 52.
Solanki, who was diabetic, was on life support system for the past one week after multiple organ failure. He had slipped into coma on Wednesday night and could not regain consciousness. Dr Arun Kumar formally declared his death at 1.10 pm, citing multiple organ failure and brain haemorrhage as the cause of death.Solanki had his entire family at his bedside when he breathed his last at 12.45 pm. His body is being brought in an ambulance from Delhi to Kanpur by his elder brother Haji Iqbal Solanki and son Haji Rehan Solanki. The body will be kept at his Jajmau residence for the masses to have a last glimpse.
The burial will take place at his ancestral graveyard adjacent to Bari Idgah, where elaborate arrangements have been made for his namaaz-e-janaza (last mass prayer) to be conducted by Qari Mohd Elahi. Earlier, the body will be kept at the Shikshak Park, Naveen Market at 11 am.
A pall of gloom descended on the city as soon as the news of his death spread.
Traders, out of respect for the departed leader, downed shutters in most parts of the city. All the markets in predominantly Muslim areas remained closed throughout the day. Several top associations announced total closure on Saturday.
