Her designs are all about opulence, extravaganza and grandeur and yet are an ethereal mix of tradition and funk. The brain behind these interior décor ranges - Raseel Gujral - believes her work is more about glamour and less about luxury.

"I describe my work as serene glamour and nothing else. Luxury is a limited zone and it has a minimal role to play in my creative skills," Gujral told IANS in an interview.

"If something is truly luxurious, it shouldn't resonate with a price tag. I believe whatever makes you feel good is a luxury item," she added.

This gifted interior designer is the daughter of Satish Gujral, one of the country's great contemporary painters and the niece of former prime minister I.K. Gujral. Thus, her love for artistic designs and creativity literally flows in her blood.

"I have grown up in a creatively driven environment and was exposed to different facets of creativity like sculpting, painting and ceramics," Gujral said.

"As I grew up, my career choices were drama, photography or architecture but none of them happened due to some personal reasons. So, here I am decorating dreams for all my clients," she added.

Gujral has been married to Navin Ansal, also an interior designer, for nearly 20 years and it was in 1995 that they came up with the idea of retail furnishing.

"Navin was flabbergasted when he heard that I was interested in opening a retail furnishing shop - a complete new concept. His first reaction was: 'Are we becoming shopkeepers?'", Gujral laughingly said.

Thus germinated the idea of their first flagship store - Casa Paradox.

The name certainly generates curiosity among everyone.

Revealing the story behind the name, Gujral stated: "We had met at a time where our lives were at the crossroads. The name was not decision-based but circumstance-based. Navin came up with the word 'Paradox' and I added the word 'Casa' just to make it interior specific."

"Both of us are mavericks and we always come up with out-of-the box ideas," she maintained.

The couple has two stores in Delhi - Casa Paradox and Paradox One, one in Mumbai - Paradox Pink, and one in Bangalore - Paradox Black.

By the end of this month, they will be launching their new boutique in Vasant Kunj's swish Emporio Mall.

Gujral's interior collection has everything from vases to candle stands to chandeliers to sofas and cushions. These desirable things come with a very heavy price tag.

The range starts from Rs.5,000 for a cushion and can go up to Rs.500,000 for a designer vase.

In the near future, the designer is planning to open an exclusive shop for accessories. She has already named it Paradox Box.

"The whole idea is to have small and affordable things under one roof. This will open ideas for gifting, as these accessories will be small, artistic and innovative," Gujral pointed out.

Talking about her inspiration, Gujral said: "I am constantly motivated by small things that surround me - be it music, light, shadows or any other. It's just the way you look at things," she added.

"I live and breathe design. All I can see is art and creativity that inspires me to do better every time," Gujral contended.
