The missile, with a range of 290-km and capable of moving at a speed 2.8 times than that of sound, was launched in its vertical mode, a source said.
Though the army has already acquired BrahMos for one of its units, Tuesday's test is aimed at better and improvised weapons.
The test comes at a time when tension is high between India and Pakistan following the Mumbai attacks. Defence Minister A.K Antony, however, said on Tuesday that the test was planned and not directed against any country.
