Nafisa's in sync with her signature style
Bangalore-born Nafisa Joseph began modelling when she was 13, so she's quite in tune with what's hip and happening. Fashion, she says, is not about designerwear but about how well you can put it all together to create a distinct look.
"I accessorise a lot," says Nafisa. "And the Lakme India Fashion Week is the right place to be because it tells you what will rule the fashion market this season. Fashion is also about making your signature style statement, which, for me, is classic yet appealing."
That's the reason why, sitting in the Liberty stall at LIFW in Mumbai wearing a Deepika Govind corset top, she felt it matched her attitude, sassing up her entire look. "You can't brand me – I'm not going to rattle off 20 designer names to impress you. I pick up whatever clothes I like," she says.
Nafisa is right now gearing up for her new show on Sony TV, to be aired by August-end. "In the show, I'm a glamorous person with attitude. I speak in Hindi and my director believes I can act, so there's no harm in it giving it a shot. But Bollywood isn't my scene and neither do I want to be an item number girl," she says.
Tall and reed thin, Nafisa has never worked out and owes her look to inheritance from her "very fit" parents. "I'm a happy person. I have seven cats and two dogs, who are my life. After work I spend time with people I love. The best way to retain my sanity in the modelling world with all its backbiting is to completely disconnect after a show. And I never take my work tension home with me," concludes Nafisa.
