The Dimapur district administration on Saturday issued curfew orders following an ethnic clash between the Sumi and Angami tribes that had its genesis in a stolen motorcycle in state capital Kohima on Friday.

Two persons, including a woman, died in the clashes across Dimapur town, Nagaland’s commercial hub 75km from Kohima.

According to police officials, trouble started when a Sumi youth accused of stealing a bike in Kohima died after members of an Angami organisation allegedly thrashed him.

Kohima is dominated by Angamis while Dimapur is a Sumi stronghold.

Among the properties that were damaged was a resort on the outskirts of Dimapur owned by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s son. Rio belongs to the Angami tribe.
