Former foreign secretary Shivshankar Menon has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed him. The other two shortlisted are another former foreign secretary, Shyam Saran, and former Indian ambassador to the US, Ronen Sen.
An official announcement is expected shortly on the appointment of a number of governors in states where incumbents’ terms have expired. Sources said Chhattisgarh governor E.S.L. Narasimhan, who is holding additional charge of Andhra Pradesh, will shift to Hyderabad. In Punjab, Shivraj Patil may replace S. F. Rodrigues.
