Naushad: End of an era

A few years back I had the privilege of meeting Naushad saab and organising a reception for him through his son-in-law who is a friend. What impressed me besides his legendary music, which I have been a fan of since my childhood, was his humility. A person unfamiliar with his stature in Bollywood would never know whom he was talking to. With his passing away Bollywood has lost a genius and a gentleman. May his soul rest in peace.

What impressed me besides his legendary music, which I have been a fan of since my childhood, was his humility. Not many people know that Naushad saab was an accomplished poet, too. A collection of ghazals penned by him was published under the title “Aathwan Sur” (The Eighth Note) and won acclaim from critics and casual readers alike.
