A GROUP of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) activists led by Medha Patkar gheraoed the Narmada Control Authority (NCA) office here today demanding that construction of Sardar Sarovar Dam be stopped till all affected families were properly rehabilitated.
The NCA has given green signal to the Gujarat Government to raise the height of the dam from the existing 110.64 metres to 121.92 metres. The decision to resume dam construction, which was suspended last year due to the delay in resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) of affected families, was taken after a meeting at Delhi on Wednesday in which senior officials from all concerned states were present.
Agitated over NCA’s decision to allow raising of dam height, the NBA activists, including old women, gheraoed the NCA office here demanding immediate suspension of all construction activities at the dam till all affected families were properly rehabilitated. The NBA blames the NCA for resumption of dam construction yesterday, as the green signal for the same was given on the basis of an action taken report (ATR) presented to the Central Government by the NCA.
NBA leader Medha Patkar, along with some NBA activists, mostly tribals from neighbouring districts, reached the NCA office located in Vijay Nagar area of the City in the evening and laid siege there. Those who were present in the office included Director (Rehabilitation) Dr Afroz Ahmed and Deputy Directors (Rehabilitation) S S Chouhan and V P Phulambrikar.
Medha Patkar asked Dr Afroz Ahmed to provide the report of the NCA on the basis of which the Central Government had given the green signal to the Gujarat Government to further raise the height of the dam. She said the dam-affected people wanted to know the facts about rehabilitation work claimed by the government.
