The last rites of the senior NCP leader Ganesh Mate were performed amidst tight security at Kanhan, a satellite township near Nagpur, on Saturday evening. A badly mutilated corpse of Mate (54), president of Nagpur district NCP Seva Dal, was found on the railway track near Itwari in east Nagpur on Friday.

It was alleged that Mate was abducted by Micky Bakshi, a history-sheeter, and then done to death over a failed farm deal running into crores of rupees.

Thousands of mourners including prominent politicians — former Maharashtra Congress president, Ranjit Deshmukh, legislator SQ Zama and NCP district president Sadanand Nimkar — gathered at the Kanhan crematorium on Saturday afternoon when Mate’s body was brought there.

A large number of policemen were deployed and security was tightened at the funeral. The crowd shouted slogans against the police for not arresting the killer Bakshi and his henchmen so far. The police prevented a large crowd from entering the crematorium amid fears of violence by Mate supporters.

Mate, who had an active political career spanning three decades, was also a property dealer. He was very popular in Kanhan region and his wife, Pramila, is a member of Kanhan gram panchayat.

It was said that Bakshi wanted to buy a piece of land through Mate and they had several meetings. However, Mate refused to settle the deal as Bakshi wanted the land at a cheaper rate. After heated exchanges, Bakshi decided to teach him a lesson.

According to complaint lodged by Swapnil, son of the victim, Mate was receiving threat calls from Bakshi since Thursday morning, asking him to reach Bakshi’s office immediately. Following this, Mate started for Bakshi’s Nagpur office on Thursday.

When Mate reached Bakshi’s office, the former was asked to come inside. They reportedly beat up Mate black and blue and told the driver, Gulshan Komti, to leave the place. As Gulshan narrated the story to Mate’s family members, they lodged a complaint with the police against Bakshi. "My father was kidnapped by Bakshi and we are afraid for his health and well being," Swapnil said in his complaint. However, the city police, instead of arresting Bakshi, advised Swapnil to lodge a ‘missing person’ complaint.

On Friday morning, Mate’s family received a phone call from railway police that a body was found on the tracks near Itwari railway station. Police said that Mate was first strangulated and his throat was slit with a sharp weapon. His car was parked beside his body while the keys lay in Mate’s pocket.

The city police said it was looking to arrest Bakshi and his associates. Bakshi, a known history-sheeter, was pampered by several political parties including the BJP. His security agency, Youth Force Security Agency, provides security personnel to several organizations, including houses of politicians. "We are collecting evidence for Mate’s death," informed Rajratan Bansod, the investigation officer and in-charge of Sadar police station.
