He was delivering the inaugural address of a ten-day refresher course on ‘Recent Developments in Water Treatment Technology’ in BHU here on Monday. Civil Engineering Department (IT-BHU) in association with Union Urban Development Ministry organised the refresher course.

Prof Upadhyay said however water was available in abundance on the earth (read two-third surface of earth is occupied by water), there were limited fresh water resources and, therefore, it was necessary to make common people aware about fresh water conservation.

He said out of the total available water on earth, a mere 2 per cent was fresh drinking water. “Out of this, 99 per cent water was available in form of ice glaciers and .01 per cent drinking water was available in lakes and rivers etc,” he said, adding, “there was need for judicious use of water in day-to-day life.”

He said higher stress was being laid on natural resources including water due to an unprecedented growth in population, agricultural and industrial activities and we could meet this increasing demand only by conservation of our natural resources. Prof Upadhyay said around 50 per cent water went waste out of the total water supply and therefore it became imperative to educate people towards water conservation.

Earlier, Head of Civil Engineering Department, Prof Virendra Kumar welcomed the guests whereas course co-ordinator, Prof Gautam Banerjee established the theme of the course. Around 20 delegates from various parts of the country including Maharashtra, Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are participating in the refresher course.
