A RS 86.33 lakh beautification plan of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) was unveiled for New Market in a function here today.

The BMC claims the plan will transform the complexion of New Market. The plan provides for fixing decorative tiles on open land at several places on 950 square meters.

A cement concrete road spread on 4,072 square meter and 12,378 square meter of asphalt road would be constructed. Besides, 418 meters long sewer line, 980 running meter of drains and 150 meter of road cross would also be constructed.

Besides, barricades would be installed at the entry points of New Market during the present development project to restrict the entry of vehicles during the daytime or peak hours.

These barricades would be removed during nights so that vehicles to transport goods could enter the New Market. Union Minister of State for Parliamentary affairs Suresh Pachauri was the chief guest in the function.

Pachauri recalled New Market was developed as a small market in 1962 but it had become the biggest commercial centre of the State Capital. He hoped this project would enhance the beauty and improve the infrastructure of New Market.

He also said that allotted funds should be utilised properly so that Bhopal would continue to get funds in future as well. The Union Minister said there were possibilities of getting more funds for the development of Bhopal under the proposed Global Green Environment City and Heritage City schemes.

Pachauri said better presentation of projects by the State Government and Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) ensured allotment of Rs 90 crore from the Union Government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for Bhopal.

Urban Administration and Development Minister Jayant Malaiya presided over the function. Malaiya said Madhya Pradesh was among the first few States, which forwarded projects under the JNNURM.

Mayor Sunil Sood urged New Market shopkeepers and traders to paint all shops and commercial establishments in similar colour.

BMC chairman Ramdayal Prajapati said Bhopal should be developed like a State capital. Leader of BJP corporators Ashok Pandey and other leaders also addressed the gathering.

Umashankar still Mayor?
It seems that Umashankar Gupta is still mayor for BJP corporators. While addressing the function, leader of BJP corporators Ashok Pandey mentioned Umashnakar Gupta as mayor on four occasions. Even the audience made aborted attempts to correct him. At the outset, he addressed Suresh Pachauri as Union Minister of Bhopal Municipal Corporation.
