Controller of Exams to remain unchanged

ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY (AU) administration on Tuesday finalised the names of Prof Satya Narayan of AU Psychology department and Prof AP Sinha of JK Institute of Applied Physics as the Post Graduate Admission Test (PGAT) and the Under Graduate Admission Test (UGAT) directors for the next session.
The varsity officials also rejected the demand of the Allahabad University Union (AUU) office-bearers and other student leaders asking for the immediate sacking of the AU Controller of Examination. The varsity officials took the decision that as the final examinations are all set to kick-off within the next four days, no such change was possible at the vital post at the moment.
The decisions in this regard were taken at a meeting of the Deans that was chaired by the AU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe this morning.
Late on Monday evening, the AU officials had a marathon meeting with the AUU office-bearers and other student leaders that witnessed high drama. Angry with the AU Controller of Examination, Prof HS Upadhyaya, for his comments in the court earlier in the day with regard to the eligibility criterion for an AU student to contest AUU polls, the student leaders demanded immediate sacking of Prof Upadhyaya from the post of AU Controller of Examination.
The students pointed out that as three children of Prof Upadhyaya are still studying in the university and will also be appearing for the exams this year, he should either step down from the post on moral grounds or be replaced by the VC.
Besides demanding an inquiry into the money spent in the last three admission tests to ascertain how much exactly did the directors spend each year, the AUU office-bearers also insisted that the present set-up of AUU be kept intact under the Central University system.
The student leaders also raised the issue of neglect of sports on the campus and pointed out that no money has been spent to promote sports in the varsity during the past five years besides demanding that no teacher be appointed to the administrative posts and those functioning be removed immediately.
They also demanded that teachers with clean images be appointed to the post of UGAT and PGAT directors for the new session.
Accepting this demand, the VC on Tuesday appointed Prof Satya Narayan of AU Psychology department and Prof AP Sinha of JK Institute of Applied Physics as the PGAT and the UGAT directors for the next session 2006-07.
The student leaders also demanded that the Centre of Fashion Design and Technology be shifted from the Women's College campus and that the admissions being granted to the wards of AU teachers and employees without admission tests be stopped with immediate effect.
