A newly married couple was charred to death in a fire that engulfed their hut at Mallappanahalli, 42 kms from at Chitradurga, Karnataka on Saturday, police said.

The victims, married six months ago have been identified as Thippeswamy (27) and Soumya (24).

The fire also spread to neighbouring huts damaging at least four of them, police said.

The district administration has sanctioned Rs one lakh compensation each to the next of kin of the victims and relief to those whose huts were burnt, police said, adding the cause of the fire was being investigated.
