As per information, the NHRC in its letter 2412/24/06-07) dated 13 May directed the SSP (Varanasi) to conduct an impartial investigation into entire issue and take proper action against the accused persons.
Dr. OP Tewari had gone with her daughter for the entrance examination of engineering on April 9, when four security guards of BHU allegedly beat up Dr. Tewari.
IMA officials had gheraoed the Lanka police station on the same day. Besides, the IMA office-bearers had also requested BHU the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Panjab Singh, the then District Magistrate and the then SSP to initiate action against the security guards. District Magistrate had ordered a magisterial inquiry into matter on April 12. But no arrest has been made till date.
IMA members and some government doctors had observed a work boycott strike on April 12 to register their protest against the alleged manhandling with Dr. Tewari. The IMA office-bearers had charged the BHU chief proctor, Prof. SK Singh for shielding the security guards.
IMA state secretary, Dr. OP Tewari said that the BHU Chief Proctor, Prof. SK Singh should resign on moral grounds. Secretary of local chapter of IMA, Dr. Sanjay Rai said that they would pursue the case till the accused security guards were arrested. All the four accused security guards have taken anticipatory bail.
