NHRC for CBI probe into Tehelka sting
The NHRC on Monday recommended a CBI probe into the accusations made in the recent sting operation by Tehelka, reports Bhadra Sinha.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday recommended a CBI probe into the accusations made in the recent sting operation by Tehelka. “The commission has decided to direct an inquiry by the CBI into the episode in the light of accusations made in the ‘Operation Kalank’ on communal violence in Gujarat,” stated an NHRC statement.

The commission’s reccomendations comes after it viewed the tapes of the programme that was aired by Aaj Tak channel. The NHRC found the contents “fit” for a probe by the agency. “The allegations had far-reaching implications and raised vital constitutional issues which need to be promptly addressed in the interest of all,” it said.
The rights panel has also directed the state government to communicate its consent for CBI probe into the authenticity of the tapes allegations to it and the Centre within two weeks.
The NHRC in 2003 had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking transfer of nine cases outside the state and handing over investigation of the post-Godhra riots to an independent agency. The state government has opposed the plea.
