NHRC suggests CBI probe into Ranbir killing by U'khand police

"The Commission has requested the government of India to lend the services of CBI and convey its concurrence to the CBI inquiry within three days," the rights body said.

The Commission also issued a notice to the DGP of Uttrakhand directing him to submit a detailed report on the matter. It also asked the DGP to forward the post-mortem and inquest reports to the commission "within two weeks".

Although the state government has handed over the investigation into the case to its Crime Investigation Department, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has the expertise and credentials to investigate such matters, the NHRC said.

"The Commission is of the opinion that the matter should be inquired into by the Central Bureau of Investigation," it said adding NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident on the basis of the media reports.
