No decision yet on UP poll dates: CEC

CHIEF ELECTION Commissioner N Gopalaswamy on Saturday asserted that the Election Commission was yet to take any decision on final dates of holding the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

“We have not discussed the poll dates. The elections in the State would be held before May 14, 2007 when the term of Vidhan Sabha expires,” he said. Asked whether the UP polls would be held along with elections to Uttaranchal and Punjab assemblies, he said this was yet to be decided.

Gopalaswamy was talking to media persons here today. The CEC was here to hear the complaints and suggestions on the Delimitation Commission of India’s proposals with regard to delimitation of the constituencies. Replying to a question about hearing on delimitation of constituencies, Gopalaswamy said a decision on the complaints would be taken in the next two months.

He, however, skipped a question about whether new delimitation of constituencies would come into effect before the next Lok Sabha polls.
