There were least cases of starvation and near starvation compared to other states and there was no case of suicide by farmers, Bhattacharjee said.
Claiming that his government had largely succeeded in ensuring social and economic uplift of the poor, the chief minister said that West Bengal had achieved tremendous success in production of paddy, fish and vegetables.
Bhattacharjee said that the Centre and the Planning Commission had already admitted West Bengal's success in this regard.
Efforts were on to step up production of oilseeds and pulses, he said, replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor's address in the House.
Observing that industry giants were eyeing West Bengal as their destination, the chief minister said investments in the state this year would be double than that of last year's Rs 1,914.72 crore.
He said substantial investments had been assured in power, petrochemicals, iron and steel and in food processing sectors.
The chief minister said that West Bengal had registered 72 per cent growth in the IT sector with investment offers received from all IT giants, except Infosys.
