Satyendra Srivastava, noted Hindi poet who taught at the University of Cambridge for 23 years and delivered lectures in various countries, passed away in London aged 79.

Azamgarh-born Srivastava was educated at the universities of Poona and London, and lectured in Indian Studies at the University of Toronto and at the University of Cambridge (from 1980-2003).

A prominent figure in London’s Indian literary circuit, Srivastava published eight collections of poetry in Hindi, as well as plays for the stage and radio, and columns for various Indian publications. He wrote in Hindi and English.

His collections in English include Talking Sanskrit to Fallen Leaves, Between Thoughts, Another Silence, and Sir Winston Knew My Mother. His long poetic work, Mrs Jones aur vah gali, depicts the life of various ethnic groups living in East London.

Srivastava's funeral on Thursday at the Golders Green Crematorium was attended by several Hindi scholars, friends and admirers.
