The administration has spent Rs 8.33 lakh on this beautification project. The passers by were struck by the beauty of this church, considered the most beautiful in Asia, said the bishop. The construction of the church began on April 10, 1871 and the monument was finally completed in 1887.
After the building was lit up, it was time for fireworks. The DM, commissioner and the municipal commissioner released pigeons and distributed chocolates and toffees to about 40 mentally retarded children from ‘Bachpan’ a government- aided society, which looks after such children.
The church was illuminated under the beautification programme of the city by the administration. The bishop, who said a short prayer , later in the church thanked the administration for taking up the church in their scheme of beautification. Next in the line of beautification amongst buildings and monuments are the Nagwasuki temple in Daraganj and the Mayo Hall sports complex.
