NSS volunteers do good job in mela area

A TEN-DAY special camp of NSS Unit 8 of CMP Degree College, which was inaugurated on January 23 by principal Dr Kiran Shankar, concluded in the Magh Mela site on Wednesday.
During the camp, 51 NSS volunteers cleaned the ghats from Mori Road ghat to the Sangam daily. Polythene, flowers and other articles thrown by devotees in the Ganga and the Sangam were collected and dumped at distant places to keep the bathing ghats clean.
The volunteers also requested the devotees not use and throw polythene, flowers and other used articles in the river. They also made them aware about the ill-effects of polythene and propagated the use of ‘tulsi’ and milk to keep the river clean.
On the eve of Republic Day, the NSS volunteers organised a Jan Jagrukta rally to free the Ganga and other rivers of pollution, stop the use of polythene, promote plantation of trees and eliminate social evils. The rally was joined by advocates, sants and devotees in large numbers.
During the camp, the volunteers spoke on various issues. Discussions on the ‘Increasing effect of criminals in politics is dangerous for Indian Republic’ and a speech competition on the ‘Causes of Ganga pollution and its remedy’ were also held.
A seminar on ‘Opportunities of employment in insurance, legal practice and media sector’ was held on January 27. Dr Yamuna Prasad Pandey, member of the executive council, Allahabad University, delivered a lecture on the ‘Status and direction of Indian Politics’ on January 31.
The volunteers presented various cultural programmes and staged plays titled ‘Bahu ki Vidai, ‘Anpadh bibi’ and ‘Ganga pradarshan’.
Dr Uma Kant Yadav, NSS co-ordinator, AU, was the chief guest of the function.
He said volunteers, under the leadership of Dr Sunil Kant Mishra, had done a commendable job by cleaning the ghats, serving the devotees and helping the mela administration.
