Indrajit Jachak, 70, was found dead at his home in Deula Sahi, about 25 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, police official SK Patnaik said.
"He was under depression. The circumstantial evidence suggests a clear case of suicide," Patnaik told IANS, adding the cause of his depression is not known yet.
His wife Prabha had gone to Bhubaneswar to meet a relative, leaving Jachak alone at home. On her return, she found the door of the house was closed from inside and her husband did not respond to her repeated calls.
She along with other relatives entered the house after breaking the door and found Jachak hanging from a ceiling fan.
Jachak had retired in 2003 as the director general police (intelligence).
