WHILE THE police is supposed to offer protection to a victim, the Naubasta police is siding with a home guard who allegedly issues threats to his wife. While the victim is running from pillar to post seeking justice, the accused is still threatening the woman to keep her mouth shut, courtesy ‘departmental support”.
Victim Anju was married to home guard Shiv Swaroop alias Laxman in February this year. After marriage, Laxman allegedly started forcing Anju to give him company during alcoholic sessions. When Anju refused to comply with his diktat, Laxman beat her up brutally. Soon, the beatings became a routine affair. When matters became unbearable, Anju somehow managed to escape from her in-law’s house and narrated the ordeal to her parents.
When Anju’s kin tried to resolve the matter, Laxman threatened them to keep their mouths shut, else he threatened to kill his daughter and forcibly taken Anju back to his home. Later, he also started demanding Rs two lakh in dowry.
On November 24, Laxman once again bashed up Anju and threw her out of the house. He also asked Anju to bring the dowry money. However, when the victim’s kin approached the Naubasta police, the cops advised them to settle the issue with the home guard.
They did this after registering a case against the ‘accused’. The police also allegedly threatened the victim’s family that they would frame them into a fake case if they did not keep their mouths shut.
Thereafter, the victim has been running from pillar to post but her complaint is not being entertained anywhere as it is a “departmental case”.
When contacted, SO Naubasta, Virendra Singh, told HT that he was aware of the matter and assured that after investigation, action would be taken accordingly. However, he denied allegations of the cops favouring the home guard.
