This revelation came to the fore during Gurgaon traffic police’s weekend drive conducted in New Gurgaon localities, including MG Road and Gurgaon Expressway on Friday evening.

Around 15 teams, including four of women police personnel, were deployed in the entire east zone, which includes posh localities such as DLF City, Sushant Lok and South City.

The drive kicked off from MG Road at 10pm on Friday and extended till the Delhi-border toll plaza on the Gurgaon Expressway, including Shankar Chowk, Iffco Chowk, Faridabad road and Golf Course road. The inspection continued till 4am on Saturday.

Of the total 435 vehicles checked by the police, drivers of 287 vehicles were challaned for drunken driving.

The police said 23 women were also made to undergo tests, but only one was fined.

Surprisingly, the average of people driving under the influence of liquor in Gurgaon is more than 50%. Despite regular drives being conducted, the numbers of those being fined is going up.

The police have already asked owners of various pubs and bars to provide cabs or drivers to those who are heavily drunk and are not in a position to drive home.

“The law is same for everyone. If anyone is caught for drunken driving twice, his licence would be recommended for cancellation and their photographs will be uploaded on Facebook. The drive will be more active during weekends” Bharti Arora DCP (traffic) told Hindustan Times.
