Barely a month after a porn scandal rocked the Karnataka assembly, two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs in Gujarat have now come under the scanner for allegedly watching pornography in the assembly.
Janak Purohit, a journalist with a vernacular newspaper, spotted MLAs Shankar Chaudhury and Jetha Bharwad allegedly watching obscene pictures of women on an iPad when the house was discussing budgetary demands of the revenue department on Tuesday.
The journalist claimed he saw the MLAs watching "pictures of Swami Vivekananda, then cartoons and then sleazy pictures of women" - from the media gallery of the assembly.
"This went on for about 20 minutes...they were engrossed in watching the vulgar pictures."
Purohit has filed a complaint with speaker Ganpat Vasava and also released a video clip - captured on a cell phone by another journalist - purportedly showing the two MLAs looking at the obscene clips.
The speaker has ordered an inquiry into the incident. Chaudhary's iPad has been seized and will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for investigation. "The allegations against the two MLAs are very serious and prima facie it seems to be a breach of their special rights," Vasava said.
The issue rocked the assembly on Wednesday with the Congress demanding the dismissal of the two MLAs.
"It is shameful that they were indulging in such activities when the proceedings were underway," said Shaktisinh Gohil, leader of opposition. "The BJP always had double and dubious standards on morality."
Chaudhary and Bharwad have denied any wrongdoing and said it was a conspiracy to malign them and the party.
