Hardline Hurriyat chairman on Saturday expressed his disapproval for any attack on sarpanches and panches saying “his part does not approve such attacks”.
“No one should be killed for his political ideology. You can’t kill an innocent person for his political views. Our standing policy and doctrine has always been against such killings,” said Geelani in Srinagar.
A sarpanch, Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo, was killed on Monday triggering resignations from 15 sarpanches and panches in north Kashmir’s Palhalan area. The police suspect that militants, who have been posting posters asking them to resign, in the past few months might be behind the attack.
Accusing the police of implicating a Hurriyat leader, Geelani said, “Nasir Ahmad Ganai alias Abdullah Nasir is innocent and has been framed by police in the killing of Yatoo.
“The government should either prove its accusations within a month through an open court trial or withdraw these accusations,” he said.
Police claim the Hurriyat leader was involved in “abetment and criminal conspiracy of the murder of the sarpanch”.
“Let an open trial court decide his (Nasir) fate. Such acts reflect police’s weakness. They fail to nab the real killers and instead detain or arrest people who have a different bent of ideology.”
