A defence spokesperson said the firing started around 9.30 am and ended around 12.30 pm.

According to the army sources, the Pakistani Army first resorted to mild, and later heavy firing at Jangla-three, PDP-1 and Shershakti border out-posts, nearly 30 km from Poonch town.

Army troops, guarding the borderline, fired back, resulting in intermittent exchanges of fire. No loss of life or property was reported on the Indian side.

It was the fourth ceasefire violation in Rajouri-Poonch districts this year. Last time Pakistan violated the ceasefire was on April 16.

According to sources, the firing was aimed at providing cover to push in terrorists from across the border. Sources said Pakistan had been making repeated attempts to infiltrate, but had been unsuccessful because of the heavy deployment of forces along the border.
