The Shillong police have sought Assembly Speaker Martin M. Dangoo’s permission to take action against Malngiang, accused of drunken misconduct during a party at a rented place owned by one Nita Khongwir, on November 9.

Malngiang is one of two representatives of the allegedly parochial Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement in the 60-member Meghalaya House. “We have initiated a probe after an FIR was lodged on house owner Nita Khongwir’s complaint,” East Khasi Hills district police chief A.R. Mawthoh said. “We have sought the permission of the Speaker so that any action, if necessary, can be taken against the legislator.”

Malngiang, however, has denied the charges leveled against him.
