Several schoolchildren began a relay fast in Patna on Monday to press for the immediate safe release of their kidnapped colleague Nirmalendu Prakash Diwakar of Don Bosco Public School.

A group of students from the school sat on fast to build up pressure on the police to rescue Nirmalendu alias Bunty, a student of class IX. The students and staff of the school also held a mass prayer. The police, meanwhile, remained clueless about the gangs involved in the abduction 14 days ago.

"We have interrogated a few people in this connection and the process is on," senior police superintendent Kundan Krishnan said and hoped that the boy would soon return. Raids were being carried out at different places in Patna and adjoining districts to rescue the boy, he said.

Nirmalendu, son of a former state animal husbandry department official and accused in the multi-crore fodder scam case, OP Diwakar, was kidnapped on his way to school on January 17.
