Andhra Pradesh, where movies are a religion, could see yet another film star make his political foray, this election season.
Pawan Kalyan, who commands the biggest fan base among the youth in the state, is expected to make a statement on his political debut in the next few days.
Known to be a maverick, both on and off screen, Kalyan's interest and affinity to socio-political issues is evident by the roles he played – Maoist to journalist. Kalyan though began his film career playing lover-boy in the 90's and displaying his martial art skills earned the name "Power-Star."
Kalyan is the younger brother of superstar turned politician K Chiranjeevi. Initially he was supportive of his brother's Praja Rajyam Party, formed during run up to the 2009 elections. But later, Kalyan distanced himself from its activities as if he was disillusioned by the way it was run.
PRP which made a lackluster debut winning just 18 assembly seats and no MP constituency, later merged with the Congress with Chiranjeevi becoming a union minister. The two brothers are rumored to be not on speaking terms since some time now.
Pawan entering politics was a hot topic in the state in 2012 with release of his movie Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu. Playing a journalist, Pawan fights for welfare of the oppressed and stresses the need of good politics.
Now, in the poll season, film and political circles are abuzz over Pawan's next move. Pawan himself said that he would talk about politics in March second week.
The Telugu Desam and Lok Satta parties offered him to join them but sources said Pawan is inclined towards forming a party of his own. However, Pawan might not go whole-hog but contest only a handful of assembly and Lok Sabha seats.
"Pawan's party is not for power but to question (the wrong)," Ashwani Dutt, a film-producer in touch with him, reportedly said.
It is also reported in local newspapers that Pawan is writing a booklet on the importance of good leaders and governance for larger good of the public, to be released with his political announcement soon.
However, not many of his fans are all enthused about his new venture. "What had happened to Chiranjeevi? He was a bigger star with bigger fan base. Pawan is much more committed but I doubt what he can achieve in the present political system," says Krishnamohan Verma, an admirer in Hyderabad.
Legendary actor NT Rama Rao formed the Telugu Desam Party in 1982 and rode to power in the state within a year. But many in the state including Pawan's fans believe those days are gone.
